News of the Day Episode 29:
Cast your vote for the new Reality Czar
Earlier this month, a group of “experts” argued for greater government oversight to protect against misinformation, disinformation, and fake news.
If this sounds somewhat Orwellian, let me put your mind at ease. Switching back and forth between Fox News and MSNBC, it’s impossible not to conclude that the cable networks serve two different countries, if not two different planets. As journalists become increasingly less able and less interested to discern between facts and opinions, the need to protect a credulous public from journalistic incompetence and malfeasance might well be considered a matter of national security.
But the obvious question is this:
Who gets to decide what is and is not fake news? Especially when social media platforms continue to demonstrate a shameless predisposition to censor some political views more than others.
